Aliens Versus Predator

Review by zombiesmusher01

"They hiss...they claw...they crawl! -Runs-"

Introduction: "Get them off! Why isn't my gun working- NO!" That was only one of many lines I screamed as I fought back countless slimy, scaly, acid dripping aliens. This game was based off of the wonderful comics by the same name. And somewhere this game also is based off a trading card game. But, anyway, this game was looked up to be the best horror game at about 1998, and I think it delivers the best horror experience. It may have some flaws, like cheesy level design, or a choppy Skirmish mode, but it is mostly all very good.

Graphics: Well, they're 1999 graphics. The walls look cheesy, the ground looks cheesy and cheap. Like if you look at the walls with focus you can see the the polygons, and you can see that they were cheaply made. But if you have a good graphics card, and turn up the detail to high, it still will look clunky (Kinda like Jedi outcast graphics for Game cube, but down graded slightly.) but, who pays attention if your being swarmed by demon like creatures? The character models are smooth, besides for the marines. They look clunky and cheap. But you'll mostly see them for four seconds then something comes by and kills them, then you. The weapon detail is good, so basically you'll know the difference between a flame thrower and a machine gun. But I feel I've seen the pulse rifle somewhere else...but where? But, anyway, the graphics were perfect back then. They blew away the other champion, Doom 2 by a long shot. Well, I feel I should write more about the environment. The feeling, the aura around each level still gives me the chills. The first level for the marine almost gave me a coma. With great lighting effects mixed with sparks and shadows, when an alien hisses and dives out of no where you will jump fifty feet in the air. 7/10

Sound: Possibly the best part about this game. Now must game's sound effects aren't the best, but this game is way better then any games out today. When walking down an eerie corridor and an alien hisses, it will spook you. All the weapons sound just like the movies. The pulse rifle sounds real, like the makers took an M16 and pulled the trigger in front of a sound recorder. Flamethrowers sound real, explosions are greatly detailed and sound good. They only problem with sound is when you shoot your shoulder cannon as predator multiple times, it misses some of the shots, so it will make the sound for two of the fast fired rounds, then miss a few, then get the others again. The clicking is still here with Predator, and his roar is here when he uses his healing devices. The marines swear and talk like normal, the voice-overs for them are also good, and the aliens hiss scream and growl. But the best part about the sound is the quietest part. Hearing the quite beeping of your motion tracker as you walk down a dark corridor is wonderfully made. 9/10

Story: Besides for the few cut scenes, there isn't much story in this game. You ether play as a marine trying to escape from the alien infested planet, or you play as Predator and try to hunt all humans, or you can play as Alien who is there to protect the "Temple" of aliens. Of course there's some type of story buried deep into this game, somewhere. Its noticeable that they tried. The marine plot has some twists, and the key word being some. The Predator doesn't have much of a plot, besides he is trying to get out with his buddies while hunting humans for fun, and as I said, Aliens are trying to kill "Intruders" and protect the queen and temple. Why is anyones guess, but just play along. Overall the story is decent, but it could've been made better. 7/10

Game play: I'm put game play into three sections. Marine, Predator, and Alien.

Marine- Marines are the prey, the hunted. So, you would think they would have tons of weapons, right? Well, you thought right. You get mini-guns, Pulse rifles, and more. But, anyway, the game play is very spooky. You think "Hey! I have 4 magazines of 99 bullets. That'll last me forever." well, your wrong. Bullets will go lightning fast when you encounter two or three aliens, or a predator. You will scream like a little girl when fifteen aliens surround you and pull you into vents. You will get scared out of your mind playing as the marine. Oh, this game is first person, so you won't be in 3rd person and you won't be able to see whats behind you unless you turn around. The game play is like a normal First person shooter. You duck, look up, and press fire. But it has more horror to it. Think Resident evil in first person with aliens instead of zombies. 8/10

Alien- Alien game play is simple. Run, tail stab, pull, eat, climb. You are the ultimate hunter, you are the king of killing. You can scale walls, hang from tops of rooms, impale with your tail, spit acid. And you also run faster then Lance Armstrong on a bike with a rocket at the back. Alien is the fastest thing in this game. And I have some advice. If you run up and go hand-to-hand with anything, you will die. Stick to stealth, hiding in vents, and in shadows. And I advise you use hit and run tactics. 6/10

Predator- The ultimate hunter! With a spear gun, wrist blades, cannons, pistols, and disc's, you'll never run out of weapons. With his tough armor, his bad attitude, and his nasty blades, you can go hand-to-hand with an alien and win. You can cloak, which only works for marines, and you can use your spear gun and snipe arms, legs, fingers, or a head off of your prey. But I didn't like that your plasma cannon made humans explode. Its not like the movies, at all. Use any tactics you want, Predator will win almost any fight. 10/10

So, game play is solid. Its creepy, its awesome, and its fast paced commando action. 10/10

Replay: This game has decent replay value, but it could've been better. Once you beat all three campaigns you'll unlock five more levels for each species, which adds to the fun. And after that you might play Skirmish mode, which just pits you up against an insane amount of aliens and other creatures. 5/10

Final Recommendation: This game is worth the 5$ it sells for. And it won't go up, this game is old. Six years to be correct. So, just pop in a good graphics card into your computer, and maybe a sound card, and then install. And if you break the disc, thats fine! You can even sell the game again and still play it. It doesn't require the disc. Oh, right. You can't play this on an XP or anything like that. Only a 98. So, I recommend buying it, you can't rent PC games after all.
