X-Men: The Official Game

Review by DrakonFyre

"Thank God it was a free rental at work!"

So, you consider yourself an X-Fan, right? Got your own replica Gem of Cytorrak, tattooed the Crimson Dawn over your left eye, or even shaved your head to look more like Charles? Well, then you're probably gonna want to play this game. If you're not, then don't try it--it's really not worth it. Wanna bet? Just Listen.

Graphics really didn't impress. They aren't as bad as other games I've seen, but nothing to write home about. I'm about halfway though the game, and I've not seen any glitches, save for the occasional wonky camera. And if you're expecting decent FMVs, you're gonna be sorely disappointed. They basically use a cross between stop-motion animation and oil paintings. While the paintings are VERY good, adding movement to them is a waste, and totally cheapens the paintings themselves.

Music also wasn't all that great. It didn't SUCK, but even as a John Ottoman fan, I can only deal with the same 20 second loop for SO LONG. Voice acting was decent--they got Logan, Kurt, Bobby, and Charles back [but what the hell? Colossus isn't from Middle America! Give him his accent!]

And now, we come to gameplay. Oops, and there it went. Bye Bye, Gameplay! You get to play as Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Iceman. Each character has a typical setup for his stages, with the exception of Iceman, who basically does an Ice Slide during the entire thing. Wolvie just attacks and attacks, whereas Nightcrawler takes the high road mostly and is more focused on Agility. I've likened this to the Sonic Heroes game. You have a Power [Wolvie], Speed [Nightcrawler] and Flight [Iceman] character. Each level is different, and you're only gonna find some of them fun. [Also, there's one level with Wolvie that you're gonna absolutely positively HATE. Trust me--I know I do].

Overall, I can only recommend this game to the die-hard fans, and those with a few free rental coupons handy.
