Airborne Troops: Countdown to D-Day

Review by knuckleduster

"A very underrated game."

Well, since no one has made a review of this game yet I'd figure I'd give it a shot. I bought this gem at my local video game store for about $20.00 clearly I thought another budget title. Well this budget title has certainly caught my interest. I'll give my reasons why this should be on the lists of WW2, stealth, and run n gun fans.

Story 8- Clearly this isn't possible in real life, but a lone airborne soldier on a whim of fate is left to complete missions that were originally destined for a resistance group, all by his lonesome. You'll be leading our two-fisted hero John through German held strongholds, factory's and other key installations. Your main purpose is to make life hard for the Germans and wreak general havoc.

Gameplay 9- Well I think very highly of the controls throughout most of the game. It's set up a lot like Freedom Fighters. You have the option of a manual aim or auto-aim feature. The auto-aim feature can be annoying at key times but for the most part is utilized well. The game has quite a few stealth missions but if thats not your cup of tea then there are enough health packs for a full frontal assault. The Germans can get very aggressive when they locate you so be ready to throw down if needed.

Graphics 9- I think that for a budget title it has very pleasing graphics. The soldiers are very distinct as for the average German infantry, Gestapo, and SS elite you can make out who they are. The tank models are nice and the background feels like war torn Europe. Many things to hind behind if there is a fire-fight and plenty of shadows and shade for those Splinter Cell like moments.

Controls 9- As I stated before the controls are very easy to learn and should not pose much of a problem even for a novice gamer.

Sound 9- The sounds in the game are very realistic. Bombs bursting, tanks shells whizzing, and bullet impacts all sound very good. Not much voice over in the game but then again it mainly focuses on action and gameplay. The tanks can be heard running in the background in some missions and you can hear planes overhead. Yet again another plus in a budget title.

Challenge 9- This game can be downright brutal at times but if you can keep a cool head throughout most missions you'll come a hero most of time. But where stealth fails a all guns blazing attack can be fun too.

I feel this game deserves a 9 in most fields for a variety of reasons. Mainly I love WW2 games, it has a good war theme going for it and its cheap. I suggest that if you see a copy and you want to kill a few hours then pick it up ASAP. I hope this was informative.
